Graduation Ceremony

On the 14th November last friday, there was a graduation ceremony held in Shuqun Secondary for the graduating classes of 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B and 41.

There were a number of people there already waiting in the morning. There were the users as well as the student helpers taking down the attendance.

Here is one of the graduants signing his attendance

In a while, there were already a number of guests seated in the hall.

Soonafter, the principal, Mr Tan started his speech to the graduates. BlogMs listened intently when he mentioned that we should not look too much on the outside, but to focus more on the insides of a person.

And then it was ex-discipline master, Mr Adrian Tan who rendered a piece of poetry for the graduants.

After that was the head prefect, Jiahui who gave her speech. BlogMs is a little amused to hear her say that she thought that speaking in front of a crowd was a torture, but in the end she said that this was something that made her stronger.

Then there was a very energetic performance by the dance club. Here's a picture of them before their performance. How colourful their costumes are!

After the performance, the principal awarded recognition to the top students.

And then BlogMs saw all of the graduating students saying goodbye to their form teachers one by one on the stage. BlogMs has to admit that BlogMs feels a little emotional too as it is also BlogMs last year here.

But in any case, the finale, which is in the form of a video was next in line. BlogMs has uploaded this in the portal if you'd like to view it.

And then it was time to eat and take pictures!

Shuqun wins Cineodeon Competition!

What makes it more impressive that we were in the finals competing with top schools. But everyone had faith and encouragement to them.

Shuqun in the Cineodeon Finals!

Wow! BlogMs has some spectacular news to tell!

A few weeks back, the media club was participating the Cineodeon festival by trying to advertising and getting more people to watch two videos. Do you still remember the posters being shown around?

BlogMs just found out that we are in the finals! Everyone did not expect that! We will be competing with Dunman High School, Hwa Chong Institution and Singapore Chinese Girls' School and Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Secondary Toa Payoh.

Woah! What an honour!

The construction has started

During the school holidays, BlogMs has noticed a couple of construction already going on in the school. The area where the basketball court is now under construction and the field has already black soil covering the area.

The area at the main entrance is fenced up too to expand with the open area next to it.

BlogMs will miss the old building as it gets demolished but is also curious and excited to know how the new area will look like!

But for memory sakes, BlogMs will put up a video done by the media club covering the teacher's day 2007 in the basketball court :

BlogMs has just come back from a lovely day at the Bukit Batok Nature Reserve for the Principal's Challenge. It was really nice to see so many of you participating by jogging and just being healthy :)

BlogMs has just realised that we have some team representatives in the All Singapore Lower Sec Maths Competition for Normal Course 2008 held on the 26th June.

And BlogMs is happy to announce that the N(T) team has won the 4th placing. YAY!

Cooking Competition

Emergency Exercise in Sqss

BlogMs had a very interesting time today in school, experiencing the emergency exercise.

We were supposed to enact a situation where there were an explosion in the science lab and then evacuate to the carpark. But did you know that there were a number of activities on going behind the scenes?

First, the emergency exercise teachers had to scour around to look for casualties. They went around all of the school and searched the rooms one by one.

Rooms which has no casualties are marked to let other people know that its been already checked.

Here is one of the casualties. He seems to have his knee hurt and cannot walk. The student helpers helped to carry him in the stretcher to the first aid room.

Where they will be taken cared of from the first aider.

And some of the teachers learnt some emergency exercise like putting out fires. BlogMs did not get a chance to see all of them unfortunately.

Many new facilities

Since the begining of the year, blogms noticed that there are many new changes to the school.

This skylight makes the area much much brighter

And there is a fountain next to the general office

This is an open air classroom. Has anyone had a class here yet?

Healthy students are better learners

Shuqun secondary school had a healthy living promotion today, and we had two very interesting events:

One of them was the Sandwich making competition.

In the morning, several participants got ready to create interesting and wonderful healthy sandwiches. The home economics room came alive with all of them scurrying around, preparing their sandwiches.

After 30 minutes, they were done and put finishing touches to the sandwiches - ready to be judged.

Maths Scrabble - The tournament

Remember the ArithmetEQ tournament that we had last week?

This week, we hosted the West Zone 1 Cluster for the ArithmetEQ competition on Monday afternoon. Schools from Yuhua Secondary, Fuhua Secondary, Commonwealth Secondary, Nan Hua High and Unity Secondary participated in the competition.

Shuqun Sports Day 2006!

Even the rain didnt dampen the spirits of the Shuqunites! Clementi stadium was full of colour and spirit from the Shuqun Secondary School on a lovely friday morning.

We want trophies!

We started at about 7.30am in the morning and started with the relay. BlogMs was amazed at how many fast runners we have in Shuqun. They ran as fast as the wind!

It was great seeing you cheer and clap for your fellow classmates! It was so much fun to see that even the teachers in the race events too!

The day ended with everyone in high spirits and happy :) BlogMs loved the entire scene.

Maths Scrabble tournament

At first glance, BlogMs thought that this was a scrabble competition. But upon closer examination, the tiles had numbers and maths terms.

It sure looked like fun! You had to create maths formulas with your tiles and the more formulas you win, the higher your score.

Have you played the ArithmetEQ before? Did you enjoyed it?

P.s BlogMs just realised that ArithmetEQ is actually a product made in Singapore! It was actually made by students just like you and a company published it.

Hong Kong Student Exchange in Shuqun

Shuqun had some guests from Hong Kong yesterday and here are a couple of pictures from the event :)

BlogMs thinks that its a great idea to have an exchange program where you can see how the students are in different countries and experience different culture. There is so much to learn from each other!

They saw the way we studied and the different activities we had here and they even participated too!

5th Inter School National Scrabble Championship

Good news - our first two teams qualified for the finals to be held on Sun 16 Apr 2006 at the Marina Square Shopping Centre!! Yay!! This year's competition was particularly stiff (the top schools have finally come in a big way), and it is wonderful that our pupils did well to make it through.

For the Prelim round, Team 1 came in 11th and Team 2 came in 22nd (the top 36 teams qualify for the finals). Team 3 - our Sec 1 Exp team - actually did very well too, coming in 53rd out of a total of 213 teams. Even Team 4 - our Sec 1 NA team - playing with only three players because two were ill, came in 192nd, more than 20 places from the bottom team.

So all in all, not a bad showing. Our Sec 1 Exp team in particular has a lot of promise, and I expect that if they continue to show the same enthusiasm and improve at the same rate, they'll definitely qualify next year.

So once again, hip hip hooray!!

Hanyut Team in Shuqun Secondary School

The Malay department was fortunate to have the Hanyut team from Suria to have a visit to Shuqun Secondary.

Hanyut is television drama series where actors are depicted in the reality delinquent scenarios. The producer of Hanyut, Sujimi Siswo was present to give a mini-talk and demonstration in the Odessey auditorium which was completely full house. Some students had to be content to sit on the floor even.

Audience participation was evident with student participating activitly in the activities - it was heartening to see you being reactive :)

By the way, Mdm Choo, one of the assistants in the science lab has just retired. You would have noticed her in the science lab helping you out. She will be missed alot. BlogMs thinks that she's very cute.

Nick Dougherty in Shuqun Secondary School

Shuqun was blessed to have the presense of the golfing professional, Nick Doughterty to the school.

Nick Dougherty, whom emerged as the champion of the European Tours in 2005 and is currently the top 100 of the official golf rankings. (Source wikipedia)

He arrived with his protege to meet the Shuqun Golfing Team to share his experiences and display some golfing tips, as well as bantering with the students and teachers

Science Fair 2006

Awesomeness! Did you catch the science fair?

On Tuesday, the Science department had an Egg throwing event. Thats where students create an apparatus to catch fresh eggs which was thrown from the second story. The objective of this experiment was to let the egg land on the apparatus and not let the egg break.

There were projects of many shapes and sizes.

BlogMs was particularly intruiged by the ingenuity of some students whom used sponges with a layer of water in them. This is so that the egg dont bounce out of the box, you reasoned. Thats a good idea!

It looked liked a lot of you were were having fun! There were alot of screaming about while you try to do practise shots using rocks (some even used wallets!) before trying out for the real egg.

There seemed to be alot of sucessful egg catchers. Unfortunately, there were also quite a number of broken eggs too. What a shame! All that eggs! It could have been used to make a nice omelette!

In the meanwhile, in the physics lab, some of you were brewing up something interesting! A crystal garden.

With different types of chemicals, different coloured crystals grow after a few minutes in the solution. And there were many many different tpes of crystals being formed.

The next day, was a competition to find the strongest bridge. Some of the bridges were colourful and wildly decorated. BlogMs was impressed by one bridge that would withstand two very heavy school bags!

Organic Garden

My goodness! Have you ever seen vegetables so fresh and green? The most amazing thing is that all these vegetables are planted by our very own Shuqun student volunteers.

Sometimes a week, after school, these student volunteers will go to the organic garden to tend to their vegetable plot. And they work hard at it! Meticulously, they would pull out the weeds and cut off the branches of the browning leaves.

No chemical fertilizers or insect killers are used. That is why the vegetables are all organic! The students only used the 'natural' way of tending the plants. Isnt that great?

BlogMs was fortunate enough to see a vegetable harvest on friday. The 1B and 1A students cheerily pulled out the 'Ba Chai' vegetables and cut off the stems and finally washed them so that it could be weighed and then to be sold later.

BlogMs bought a bag of these veggies. I must say that it was the yummiest veggies that I've ever tasted in a long long time ;)

Chinese New Year Celebrations 2006!

Chinese New Year Celebration was a fun filled event from the mornings to the afternoon.

We were joined by our little guests, all the way from Korea! It was so charming to see these children, whose ages ranged from 9 to 12 exploring the area.

We then later had an enjoyable concert that featured the band, the wushu team, a video produced by the Chinese department, live singing! Among other things.

We ended at about 12noon to enjoy our long break. Happy Chinese New year everyone! :)

Delicious insta-pizza. I hope it tasted as good as it looked. You all looked so happy and excited while making it :)

These are all the presents wrapped up by our very own seniors. The wrapping looked as good a professionally wrapped even! You could see that alot of effort went in, into decorating these.

N Level Examination results out

The N Level Examination results is out from 2pm today. Those whom undertook the examinations are reminded that the final date for the registration for ITE starts today and ends on the 22nd of December, 2005.

You can register online through www.ite.edu.sg and the deadline to register for 5NA is this wednesday, 21st December 2005. Details for registration of 5NA will be announced this Friday, 23 December at 10am.

Wow, Shuqun was featured in the new paper on the 26th November 2005. Does anyone have a copy of that issue? I dont have it, but here is an online edition of the segment.

Prize giving on graduation day

The 28th October is the date for the graduation ceremony for Shuqun for the year 2005. Though it was a simple affair, it still had a special feel for the graduating students as they reflect on their final days in Shuqun before facing their O levels.

The graduation ceremony was graced by the COO of NTUC as well as other contributors to the school. After the speech by the Principal of Shuqun, Mrs Chua, the prize giving ceremony were then awarded to the students whom did well academically as well as in their CCA's.

After which, each student from the graduating class would give their thanks to their form teacher on the stage and finally view a video which was specially created for them.

When I first came to the school, I was very taken in by the beautiful flora and fauna of the School. Especially the healing garden. It was a wonderful sight to see, the colourful and gorgeous flowers and to listen to the gushing of the waterflow from the pond, it would really just soothe the heart. I loved it.

Best wishes to all the students who are taking their O level exams this year. You've trained for about 4 years for this momentous event. You've put in so much time and effort and now you will be facing the challenge. You can do it! And we all believe in you.

Teachers day celebration was celebrated with a concert by the different students of Shuqun. It started with a band, following a dance and singing as well as the finale, which was students imitating the teachers. A pretty impressive concert :)
